Championship standings

Max Verstappen leads the Drivers’ Championship with 277 points, 78 ahead of Lando Norris and 100 ahead of Charles Leclerc. Red Bull Racing leads the Constructors’ Championship with 408 points, followed by McLaren (366) and Ferrari (345).

Previous race

At the Belgian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton inherited victory after George Russell was disqualified post-race for his car being 1.5 kilograms underweight. Oscar Piastri finished second and Charles Leclerc third.

Regulatory changes after the summer break

Several regulation changes take effect from this race onwards. Penalties accrued during sprint races that remain unserved can now be transferred to Grand Prix grid penalties. Red flag procedures have been clarified. Teams are now permitted to conduct mule car testing.

Entrants

The driver and team line-up remains unchanged from the season entry list. Robert Shwartzman drives for Sauber in place of Valtteri Bottas during the first practice session. This marks the last race for Williams driver Logan Sargeant, who is to be replaced by Formula 2 driver Franco Colapinto from the following round.

Penalties

Alexander Albon is disqualified from qualifying for an illegal floor on his Williams. Lewis Hamilton receives a three-place grid penalty for impeding Sergio Pérez in Q1.

Sunny conditions are expected for race day.

Tyre choices

Pirelli brings the C1, C2, and C3 tyre compounds — the three hardest in their range — designated hard, medium, and soft respectively.

Practice

The first free practice session, held in rainy conditions on a wet-but-drying track, is topped by Lando Norris of McLaren ahead of Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. The second session is topped by George Russell of Mercedes ahead of Oscar Piastri and Hamilton. The third session, also held in rainy conditions, is topped by Pierre Gasly of Alpine ahead of Kevin Magnussen and Valtteri Bottas. The session is red-flagged and suspended after Logan Sargeant suffers a heavy crash — his car bottoms out on a patch of grass at the exit of turn three, sending him into a spin that strikes the barriers rear-end first at high speed, causing the car to burst into flames. The session resumes only for one final lap and a practice start.
