Championship standings

Piastri leads the Drivers’ Championship with 99 points, ten ahead of Norris and twelve ahead of Verstappen in third. McLaren lead the Constructors’ with 188 points, 77 clear of Mercedes.

Previous race

Piastri won in Jeddah, capitalising on Norris crashing out in Q3 to start tenth. Verstappen cut the opening corner after being challenged by Piastri at turn 1 and received a five-second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage. Leclerc finished third — Ferrari’s first podium of the season. Piastri takes the championship lead for the first time in his career, becoming the first Australian to lead the standings since his manager Mark Webber at the 2010 Japanese Grand Prix.

Entrants

This is the final race for Jack Doohan at Alpine. From the following Emilia Romagna Grand Prix onward, reserve driver Franco Colapinto will take the seat on a rotating basis.

Sprint format

Miami is the second sprint weekend of the season. The schedule replaces the second free practice session with sprint qualifying and a sprint race.

Tyre choices

Pirelli brings the C3, C4 and C5 compounds — designated hard, medium and soft.

Practice

The sole free practice session was topped by Piastri ahead of Leclerc and Verstappen. A red flag was shown in the closing stages after Bearman hit the wall at turn 12.
