2025 Australian Grand Prix
Pre-Race Report
Entrants
The Australian Grand Prix doubles as a mass debut weekend. Oliver Bearman (Haas), Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes), Jack Doohan (Alpine), Gabriel Bortoleto (Sauber), Liam Lawson (Red Bull) and Isack Hadjar (Racing Bulls) all make their starts as full-time drivers. Lewis Hamilton begins his Ferrari career here after twelve seasons at Mercedes. Esteban Ocon joins Haas, Nico Hülkenberg joins Sauber and Carlos Sainz Jr. joins Williams.
Tyre choices
Pirelli brings the C3, C4 and C5 compounds — designated hard, medium and soft — for the event.
Practice
Three free practice sessions were held. Doohan caused the first red flag of the weekend in FP1 when he ran wide through turn 6 and dragged gravel onto the circuit; Bearman followed with a second stoppage after losing the rear of his car at the turn 9–10 chicane and hitting the wall. Despite the disruptions, the session ended with Norris, Sainz, Leclerc, Piastri and Verstappen making up the top five.
Bearman did not participate in FP2 — his car still being repaired — while Hülkenberg spun into a gravel trap at turn 6 and was called back to the pits for a floor check. Leclerc topped the session, with Piastri, Norris, Tsunoda and Hamilton completing the top five.
Bearman brought out a third red flag in FP3 when he spun at turn 11 and beached the car in the gravel; Lawson also retired early with a power unit system problem. Piastri set the fastest time of the session ahead of Russell, Verstappen, Leclerc and Antonelli.
