Championship standings

Piastri leads the Drivers’ Championship with 131 points, sixteen ahead of Norris and thirty-two ahead of Verstappen in third.

Previous race

Piastri won the sprint in Miami from second on the road after sprint pole-sitter Antonelli ran wide at the first corner. In the main race, Piastri took the lead from Verstappen mid-race and held on to win by a comfortable margin ahead of Norris and Russell. Verstappen received a ten-second penalty in the sprint for an unsafe release involving Antonelli. Norris was pushed off track by Verstappen on the opening lap of the grand prix; the stewards took no action.

Between-race developments

Jack Doohan has been relegated to a reserve role at Alpine. Franco Colapinto, who raced for Williams in nine Grands Prix during the second half of 2024, joins the team from this race onward and is initially scheduled to race until the Austrian Grand Prix on a rotating-seat basis.

Entrants

This is Red Bull Racing’s 400th Formula One World Championship appearance, and Sauber’s 600th, counting their appearances under the BMW Sauber name in 2006–2009 and the Alfa Romeo name in 2019–2023. Franco Colapinto makes his Alpine debut.

Practice

Piastri topped FP1 ahead of Norris and Sainz; Bortoleto crashed at turn 18 in the closing minutes, bringing out a red flag. Piastri again led FP2 ahead of Norris and Gasly; Hadjar found the gravel at turn 4 and triggered a second stoppage. FP3 was led by Norris ahead of Piastri and Verstappen.
