Championship standings

Piastri leads the Drivers’ Championship with 346 points, fourteen ahead of Norris in second. Verstappen is third, forty points behind Piastri.

Previous race

Verstappen won both the sprint and the main race in Austin. The McLarens both retired in the sprint following a first-corner collision — Piastri ran into Hülkenberg’s Sauber while attempting a switchback on Norris, pushing both McLarens out. Norris finished second in the grand prix, closing the gap to Piastri to fourteen points. Sainz earned Williams their first sprint podium with third in the sprint, after a late safety car. Leclerc’s third place in the grand prix mathematically eliminated him from championship contention.

Between-race developments

Carlos Sainz Jr. carries a five-place grid penalty this weekend for causing a collision with Kimi Antonelli at the United States Grand Prix.

Entrants

Nine teams field alternate drivers in FP1 as part of the mandatory young driver requirement: Patricio O’Ward (McLaren), Frederik Vesti (Mercedes), Antonio Fuoco (Ferrari), Arvid Lindblad (Red Bull), Luke Browning (Williams), Jak Crawford (Aston Martin), Ryō Hirakawa (Haas), Paul Aron (Alpine) and Ayumu Iwasa (Racing Bulls). Fuoco and Crawford make their Formula One practice debuts.

Penalties

Sainz carries a five-place grid penalty for causing a collision with Antonelli at the United States Grand Prix.

Pirelli brings the C2, C4 and C5 compounds — designated hard, medium and soft.

Practice

Leclerc topped FP1 ahead of Antonelli and Hülkenberg. Verstappen led FP2 ahead of Leclerc and Antonelli. Norris set the pace in FP3 ahead of Hamilton and Russell.
