Championship standings

Piastri leads the Drivers’ Championship with 309 points, thirty-four ahead of Norris and one hundred and four ahead of Verstappen in third.

Previous race

Piastri won in Zandvoort for his first career grand chelem — pole position, fastest lap and leading every lap. Verstappen finished second, maintaining his perfect podium record at his home race. Hadjar took third for his maiden Formula One podium and Racing Bulls’s first under their current name. Norris retired from fifth on lap 65 with an oil leak. Both Ferrari drivers also retired: Leclerc crashed heavily after contact from Antonelli (who received a ten-second penalty), and Hamilton hit the wall by driver error.

Penalties

Hamilton carries a five-place grid penalty for failing to slow under double yellow flags at the Dutch Grand Prix.

Entrants

Alex Dunne replaces Piastri at McLaren in FP1; Paul Aron replaces Colapinto at Alpine in FP1.

Tyre choices

Pirelli brings the C3, C4 and C5 compounds — designated hard, medium and soft.

Practice

Hamilton topped FP1 ahead of Leclerc and Sainz. Norris led FP2 ahead of Leclerc and Sainz; a red flag was shown after Antonelli beached his Mercedes at turn 7. FP3 was topped by Norris ahead of Leclerc and Piastri.
