Championship standings

Piastri leads the Drivers’ Championship with 324 points, thirty-one ahead of Norris and ninety-four ahead of Verstappen in third.

Previous race

Verstappen won at Monza from the fastest pole position lap in Formula One history, and the race itself set new records for the fastest winning time and fastest average race speed. Norris and Piastri completed the podium, but McLaren issued controversial team orders in the closing laps — instructing Piastri, who had overcut Norris during a slow pit stop, to wave his teammate through. Alonso suffered a front-right suspension failure at the Ascari complex and retired.

Championship permutations

McLaren have an opportunity to clinch the Constructors’ Championship at this race. They can seal the title by achieving a one-two or one-three finish, regardless of where any other team finishes.

Pirelli brings the three softest compounds — C4, C5 and C6 — designated hard, medium and soft.

Practice

Norris topped FP1 ahead of Piastri and Leclerc; the session was disrupted by a lengthy red flag caused by debris on track and further kerb issues at turn 16. Hamilton led FP2 ahead of Leclerc and Russell. FP3 was topped by Norris ahead of Verstappen and Piastri.
