Championship standings

Piastri leads the Drivers’ Championship with 324 points, twenty-five ahead of Norris and sixty-nine ahead of Verstappen in third.

Previous race

Verstappen won in Baku for his second consecutive victory and sixth career grand chelem. McLaren had the opportunity to clinch the Constructors’ title in Azerbaijan but fell short. Piastri crashed out on the first lap — his first retirement since the 2023 United States Grand Prix. Sainz finished third for Williams’s first podium since the rain-curtailed 2021 Belgian Grand Prix.

Championship permutations

McLaren have a second opportunity to clinch the Constructors’ Championship here. They can secure the title by scoring just 13 points, regardless of where either Mercedes or Ferrari finish.

Circuit change

The pit lane has been widened by one metre; the pit lane speed limit increases from 60 km/h to 80 km/h.

Weather

The FIA has received a forecast predicting the heat index will exceed 31 °C during the race and has declared a heat hazard. Teams may fit cooling systems for their drivers, with the minimum car weight raised by 5 kg to compensate.

Tyre choices

Pirelli brings the C3, C4 and C5 compounds — designated hard, medium and soft.

Practice

Alonso topped FP1 ahead of Leclerc and Verstappen; Albon had a brake fire early in the session and did not set a time. FP2 was led by Piastri ahead of Hadjar and Verstappen, but was interrupted by two red flags — Russell hit the wall at turns 16–17 and Lawson crashed at turn 16. During the same session, Ferrari were fined €10,000 after Leclerc was released from the pit lane early and made contact with Norris. A red flag in FP3 stopped proceedings after Lawson lost the car at turn 7; the session was topped by Verstappen ahead of Piastri and Russell.
