Championship standings

Both titles have been decided. Max Verstappen leads the Drivers’ Championship by 136 points from Sergio Pérez in second and 141 from Charles Leclerc in third. Red Bull Racing leads Ferrari by 209 points and Mercedes by 249 in the Constructors’ Championship.

Previous race

Verstappen won Mexico City, breaking the record for most wins in a Formula One season — previously held jointly by Michael Schumacher (2004) and Sebastian Vettel (2013). Stroll carried a grid penalty into the race for the collision with Alonso at Austin.

Sprint format

This is the third and final sprint weekend of the 2022 season. Qualifying takes place on Friday evening; the sprint race runs on Saturday.

Safety situation

In the aftermath of Brazil’s general election on 30 October, political unrest prompted protests across the country. Reports emerged that Ferrari’s logistics trucks were blocked by demonstrators on their way from Viracopos International Airport to the circuit. The FIA and Formula One rights holder Liberty Media monitored the situation; on 2 November, Formula One confirmed the event will proceed as scheduled.
