Championship standings

Max Verstappen leads the Drivers’ Championship by 116 points from Charles Leclerc in second and 125 from Sergio Pérez in third after the Italian Grand Prix. Red Bull Racing leads Ferrari by 139 points and Mercedes by 164 in the Constructors’ Championship.

Previous race

Verstappen won the Italian Grand Prix under a late safety car caused by Ricciardo’s retirement with an oil leak. Leclerc led from pole but made two pit stops — the first under a virtual safety car after Vettel retired — surrendering the lead each time. De Vries made his Formula One race debut for Williams, filling in for Albon who was hospitalised with appendicitis.

Championship permutations

Verstappen can clinch his second consecutive Drivers’ Championship at this race. He needs to outscore Leclerc by 22 points, Pérez by 13, and Russell by six.

Milestones

This is Fernando Alonso’s 350th Formula One race start, breaking Kimi Räikkönen’s record that he equalled at the Italian Grand Prix.

This is the first Singapore Grand Prix since 2019; the 2020 and 2021 editions were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Sebastian Vettel enters as the defending race winner from 2019.

Track changes

The first and third DRS activation points have been moved further back — 48 metres after turn 5 and 43 metres after the apex of turn 23, respectively.
