Championship standings

Max Verstappen has secured his second consecutive Drivers’ Championship at the previous round, the Japanese Grand Prix. He leads by 113 points from Sergio Pérez in second and 114 from Charles Leclerc in third. Red Bull Racing leads Ferrari in the Constructors’ Championship by 165 points and Mercedes by 232 points.

Verstappen won Japan to claim the title — the race ran for only 28 laps before reaching the three-hour time limit after a red flag and safety car restart. A recovery vehicle deployment during the red flag period drew sharp criticism; Pierre Gasly narrowly missed it in poor visibility. Leclerc received a post-race five-second penalty, which moved him to third behind Pérez.

Championship permutations

Red Bull Racing can seal their fifth World Constructors’ Championship — their first since 2013 — if Ferrari fails to outscore them by 19 points.

Five drivers make their Formula One practice debuts during FP1: Logan Sargeant (Williams, in place of Nicholas Latifi), Robert Shwartzman (Ferrari, in place of Charles Leclerc), Théo Pourchaire (Alfa Romeo, in place of Valtteri Bottas), Álex Palou (McLaren, in place of Daniel Ricciardo — the 2021 IndyCar Series champion), and Antonio Giovinazzi (Haas, in place of Kevin Magnussen).
