Championship standings

Max Verstappen leads the Drivers’ Championship by 21 points from Sergio Pérez in second, with Charles Leclerc in third after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Red Bull Racing leads Ferrari by 80 points and Mercedes by 118 in the Constructors’ Championship.

Previous race

Verstappen won Azerbaijan after Pérez and Leclerc both led early. Sainz retired on lap 9 with a hydraulic issue; Leclerc took the lead briefly before suffering a power unit failure on lap 20 and retiring. Pérez finished second. Both Ferrari drivers are now dealing with power unit component quotas — Leclerc starts this weekend from the back of the grid after exceeding his allocation.

Milestones

This is the 57th running of the Canadian Grand Prix, the first at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve since 2019 after the 2020 and 2021 races were cancelled by the COVID-19 pandemic. It is also Max Verstappen’s 150th Formula One race start, and the home race for both Lance Stroll and Nicholas Latifi.

Practice

Verstappen was fastest in FP1 ahead of Sainz and Alonso. Early in the session Ocon returned to the pits after a paper towel became lodged in his brake duct. Albon, Schumacher, Magnussen, and Latifi each missed the turn 12 chicane in separate incidents; all returned to the circuit unharmed.

Verstappen topped FP2 ahead of Leclerc and Sainz. Leclerc stopped at the pit lane exit with turbocharger issues; after the session the team confirmed he requires a new turbo, resulting in a 10-place grid penalty that, combined with other component changes, places him at the back of the grid. Vettel was released into the path of Magnussen in the pit lane; the FIA determined it was an unsafe release and fined Aston Martin €5,000.

Rain fell throughout FP3. Alonso was fastest ahead of Gasly and Vettel. Tsunoda, Magnussen, and Vettel all ran off at turn 1; Verstappen spun onto the grass at turn 2.
