Championship standings

Max Verstappen leads the Drivers’ Championship by six points from Charles Leclerc in second and 31 from Sergio Pérez in third after the Spanish Grand Prix. Red Bull Racing leads Ferrari by 26 points and Mercedes by 75 in the Constructors’ Championship.

Previous race

Verstappen won Spain despite DRS issues, with Pérez moving aside on lap 49 as they were on different strategies. Russell completed the podium. Leclerc had led from pole but retired on lap 27 with a turbo and MGU-H failure. The championship swung from a 19-point Leclerc lead to a 6-point Verstappen lead in a single race.

Practice

For the first time in the race’s history, Monaco’s opening practice sessions are held on Friday rather than the traditional Thursday. FP1 and FP2 take place on Friday; FP3 and qualifying on Saturday.

Leclerc led both FP1 and FP2. In FP1 he was fastest ahead of Pérez and Sainz; the session was red-flagged when Mick Schumacher stopped at the pit lane entry with a gearbox issue. In FP2 Leclerc led Sainz and Pérez; Daniel Ricciardo’s crash brought out the red flag.
