Championship standings

Charles Leclerc leads the Drivers’ Championship by 34 points from George Russell in second and 38 from Carlos Sainz Jr. in third after the Australian Grand Prix. Ferrari leads Mercedes by 39 points and Red Bull by 49 in the Constructors’ Championship.

Previous race

Leclerc won Australia from pole position, led every lap, and set the fastest lap — Ferrari’s first grand slam since Alonso at the 2010 Singapore Grand Prix. Pérez finished second and Russell third. Verstappen retired with fuel leaks causing a fire; Sainz spun out at turn 10 on the opening lap; Vettel, making his season debut, crashed out in the opening stages.

Sprint format

This is the first sprint weekend of the 2022 season. Qualifying moves to Friday evening to set the sprint grid. The sprint race runs Saturday morning, followed by a second free practice session in the afternoon. The Grand Prix grid is set by the Sunday qualifying session. Points are awarded to the top eight sprint finishers.

Track changes

The DRS detection point has been moved further back, now positioned 385 metres before turn 17.

Tyre choices

Pirelli brings the C2, C3, and C4 compounds (hard, medium, soft).

Practice

There are two practice sessions this weekend. Charles Leclerc was fastest in FP1 ahead of Carlos Sainz Jr. and Max Verstappen. The session was red-flagged twice as wet conditions caused spins at turn 12 — first by Lando Norris and then by Valtteri Bottas.

George Russell set the fastest time in FP2 ahead of Sergio Pérez and Leclerc.
