Pre-Race Report

Previous race

At Silverstone, Watson led from the start after Hunt made a poor getaway, but Watson’s fuel system failed 15 laps from the end. Hunt inherited the lead and took his first win of the season, the crowd’s relief at a British champion winning his home race considerable. Lauda was second and Nilsson third. Villeneuve debuted, qualifying ninth. Jabouille’s Renault turbo ran 16 laps before the turbocharger failed.

Track changes

The German Grand Prix moves to Hockenheimring. The Nürburgring is not used due to concerns over the ability of organizers to marshal the vast circuit safely — concerns sharpened by Lauda’s near-fatal accident there in 1976. This is only the second time the German Grand Prix is held at Hockenheim, the first being in 1970.

Milestones

Scheckter takes the first pole position of his season. The race start is given by the drop of the German national flag after the standard red/green light system was damaged by a service vehicle before the race.
