Championship standings

Stewart leads Fittipaldi by just one point — 42 to 41 — with Cevert third on 31. In the Manufacturers’ Cup, Lotus (52 points) holds the narrowest of leads over Tyrrell (51).

Previous race

Peterson took his first career Formula One victory at Paul Ricard, with Cevert second and Reutemann third. Scheckter, leading on his debut factory McLaren outing in only his third F1 race, was involved in a collision with Fittipaldi while being lapped; both retired. The pair exchanged fierce words in the aftermath, with Scheckter later recalling that Fittipaldi called him “a young hooligan.”

Between-race developments

McLaren have put Scheckter on the sidelines for several races following the France incident, with a number of team principals calling for a ban from the sport.
