Stewart won at Kyalami after a recovery drive from deep on the grid, where he had been relegated after a brake failure destroyed his practice time. On lap 3, Clay Regazzoni and Mike Hailwood collided, both cars catching fire. Hailwood climbed from his own machine and dragged Regazzoni from his burning BRM despite his overalls catching alight — an act for which he later received the George Medal. McLaren lodged a protest against Stewart for overtaking under yellow flags; the stewards issued a reprimand but upheld the result.

Circuit change

The Spanish Grand Prix moves from Jarama to the Montjuïc street circuit in Barcelona, a circuit combining tight hairpins with high-speed blind corners at average speeds above 160 km/h.
