Championship standings

Brabham and Hulme are the only remaining contenders for the Drivers’ Championship. The season has been a tale of two halves for Lotus: since the Lotus 49 made its debut at Zandvoort, it has taken pole at every race it has entered, yet the team has finished fewer than half its races.

Previous race

Surtees won a chaotic Italian Grand Prix for Honda — the first win for the Honda factory team since 1965. Clark recovered from a puncture that cost him a full lap to rejoin, unlap himself, and reclaim the lead on lap 60, only to run out of fuel on the final lap. Brabham slid wide at the last corner trying to pass Surtees and crossed the line second by 0.2 seconds. Clark coasted home third.

Matra makes its Formula One chassis debut with the new MS7, driven by their Formula Two driver Jean-Pierre Beltoise.

Practice

Friday practice was held under dark, misty conditions, with the weather improving through the session. Saturday was considerably clearer.

Story

Ford public affairs director Walter Hayes — who contributed £75,000 toward the development of the Cosworth DFV — proposed that the two Lotus drivers flip a coin to decide the winner in the event both were in contention at the finish. Hill won the toss. The arrangement is to be reversed in Mexico.
