Championship standings

Hulme leads the championship. Clark has closed the gap after his British victory, with Brabham and Amon also in contention.

Previous race

Clark won at Silverstone from the front, though Hill had briefly led before a failed suspension screw forced him to pit on lap 55 and his engine seized ten laps later. Hulme finished second; Amon passed Brabham in the closing laps for third.

Entrants

The German Grand Prix is run as a combined Formula One and Formula Two race on the 14.2-mile Nürburgring, as has been the custom in recent years. Ten Formula Two cars with 1600cc engines join the field. F2 drivers are ineligible for championship points. Among the F2 field are Jacky Ickx and Jo Schlesser in Matras, and Hubert Hahne in a special F2 chassis fitted with a 2-litre BMW engine. Jackie Oliver, Brian Hart, and Brian Redman make their World Championship debuts this weekend.

Track changes

Changes have been made to the Nürburgring in an attempt to slow the cars at the pit area approach, though with car performance having developed considerably over the past year, the effect on lap times is expected to be minimal.

Practice

Graham Hill crashed heavily during practice, writing off his Lotus. He escaped uninjured.
