Championship standings

Pedro Rodríguez leads the championship after his unexpected victory in South Africa — the first Formula One win for a Mexican driver.

Previous race

Rodríguez took his maiden Formula One win in Johannesburg after championship leader John Love, running a privately entered Cooper Climax, had to pit for fuel from the lead with seven laps remaining. Love finished second; John Surtees was third in the Honda on his debut for the team. Denny Hulme and Jack Brabham finished several laps down but both scored points as only six cars were classified.

Between-race developments

The four months between South Africa and Monaco have included non-championship Formula One races. Dan Gurney won the Race of Champions at Brands Hatch in the Eagle-Weslake; Mike Parkes took the BRDC International Trophy for Ferrari.

Entrants

Several of the top teams did not contest South Africa and make their first appearance of the season at Monaco: Ferrari, McLaren, and a pair of Formula Two Matras. Lotus also return; they had planned to debut their new Cosworth-powered car but the engines are not yet ready, and the team runs older machinery. The Eagle-Weslake team appears at Monaco for the first time. French driver Johnny Servoz-Gavin makes his World Championship debut in one of the Matra Formula Two cars.

Track changes

The start and finish line has been moved closer to Sainte-Dévote, lengthening the straight after the Gasworks hairpin.
