Hulme leads the championship with 16 points. Rodríguez and Amon are joint second on 11 points each, with the four opening rounds having produced four different winners.

Previous race

Gurney won at Spa for Eagle-Weslake, setting a new average speed record for a Grand Prix and topping 196 mph on the back straight. Jackie Stewart finished second for BRM; Amon was third for Ferrari. Mike Parkes suffered a severe accident on the opening lap after losing control at Blanchimont — he broke both legs, spent a week in a coma, and will not race in Formula One again.

Ferrari has reduced its operation to a single car for Chris Amon following Parkes’s career-ending crash at Spa.

Circuit

The French Grand Prix moves to the Bugatti circuit at Le Mans — the first time it has been held there since 1929. The new infield section uses the main pit straight from the 24 Hours circuit and was considered too short by many drivers, who privately favoured running on the full 13.5 km Circuit de la Sarthe. The Bugatti circuit opened in 1965 and measures considerably shorter than the other circuits used in this year’s championship.
