2024 Canadian Grand Prix

The Canadian Grand Prix is the ninth round of the 2024 season, held at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal.

Championship standings

Max Verstappen leads the Drivers’ Championship with 169 points, 31 ahead of Charles Leclerc and 56 ahead of Lando Norris. Red Bull Racing leads the Constructors’ Championship with 276 points, followed by Ferrari (252) and McLaren (184).

Previous race

At the Monaco Grand Prix, Leclerc took pole position and won his home race — the first Monegasque driver to win at Monaco since Louis Chiron in 1931. Verstappen finished sixth while Pérez was eliminated in Q1. Both Haas drivers were disqualified from qualifying for a DRS technical non-compliance.

Entrants

The driver and team line-up is unchanged from the season entry list. Jack Doohan drives for Alpine in the first free practice session, taking the place of Esteban Ocon.

Penalties

Esteban Ocon carries a five-place grid penalty for causing a collision with his teammate Pierre Gasly at the preceding Monaco Grand Prix.

Weather

Rain is expected at the start of the race, with conditions drying later.

Tyre choices

Pirelli brings the C3, C4, and C5 tyre compounds — the softest three in their range — designated hard, medium, and soft respectively.

Practice

The first free practice session is topped by Lando Norris of McLaren ahead of Carlos Sainz Jr. and Charles Leclerc. The second session is topped by Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin ahead of George Russell and Lance Stroll. The third session is topped by Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes ahead of Max Verstappen and Russell.
