Championship standings

Verstappen is the 2023 World Drivers’ Champion, having clinched the title during the Qatar sprint. He leads the standings with 433 points, ahead of Pérez by 209 points. Hamilton is third, a further 30 behind Pérez. Red Bull hold the Constructors’ Championship, leading Mercedes by 331 points and Ferrari by a further 28.

Previous race

At Qatar, Piastri won the sprint — his first competitive victory of any kind since his final Formula 2 race — ahead of Verstappen and Norris, with Verstappen thereby securing his third consecutive Drivers’ Championship. The race was run in extreme heat: Sargeant retired early due to heat stroke and dehydration, Ocon vomited twice in his cockpit but finished seventh, and Stroll reported briefly losing consciousness and experiencing blurred vision. McLaren set a new pit stop record of 1.80 seconds servicing Norris. Sainz was unable to start the race due to a fuel leak.

Sprint format

This is the fifth sprint weekend of the season.

Entrants

Daniel Ricciardo returns to AlphaTauri this weekend, replacing Liam Lawson who substituted for five races following Ricciardo’s broken metacarpal at Zandvoort.

Tyre choices

Pirelli brings the C2, C3, and C4 compounds — designated hard, medium, and soft.

Practice

The single free practice session is topped by Verstappen ahead of Leclerc and Hamilton. Stroll runs only five laps before returning to the pits with brake issues.
