Championship standings

Verstappen leads with 466 points, ahead of Pérez by 226. Hamilton is third, a further 39 behind. Red Bull lead the Constructors’ with 706 points, 362 ahead of Mercedes. Ferrari are third, 22 behind Mercedes. McLaren are fourth, 80 behind Ferrari.

Previous race

At COTA, Verstappen won the sprint from Hamilton and Leclerc. In the main race, Hamilton and Leclerc were both disqualified in post-race scrutineering for excessive wear on their rear skid blocks. Norris was promoted to second and Sainz to third, while Logan Sargeant was elevated to tenth — his first Formula One championship point, and the first scored by an American driver since Michael Andretti at the 1993 Italian Grand Prix.

Between-race developments

Hamilton’s and Leclerc’s COTA disqualifications have been applied to the final results. Haas has filed a right of review regarding undetected track limit violations at turn 6 during the race; a hearing is scheduled for 8 November.

Entrants

Five teams field alternate drivers in FP1 to meet their mandatory young driver obligations: Théo Pourchaire for Alfa Romeo (in place of Bottas), Oliver Bearman for Haas (in place of Magnussen), Frederik Vesti for Mercedes (in place of Russell), Jack Doohan for Alpine (in place of Gasly), and Isack Hadjar for AlphaTauri (in place of Tsunoda). Bearman, Vesti, and Hadjar make their Formula One practice debuts. Ricciardo continues in his AlphaTauri seat.

Tyre choices

Pirelli brings the C3, C4, and C5 compounds — the three softest in their range. Pirelli also provides two sets per driver of an experimental C4 compound, to be trialled in FP1 and FP2.

Practice

Verstappen tops all three sessions: ahead of Albon and Pérez in FP1, Norris and Leclerc in FP2, and Albon and Pérez again in FP3.
