2020 Italian Grand Prix

Previous race

Hamilton won the Belgian Grand Prix, leading every lap and finishing 8 seconds clear of Bottas in second. Verstappen was third. Ricciardo set the fastest lap on the final lap to finish fourth. On lap 11, Giovinazzi crashed at Campus corner and a wheel came loose, striking the front-right suspension of George Russell’s car; both drivers retired. Renault finished fourth and fifth — their best combined result since returning to the sport in 2016.

Between-race developments

The FIA has issued a technical directive banning qualifying-specific engine modes from this race onwards. The ban had originally been planned to take effect at the Belgian Grand Prix but was delayed by one round.

Roy Nissany drives for Williams in the first practice session, replacing George Russell.

Tyre choices

Pirelli brings the C2, C3, and C4 compounds — the second, third, and fourth hardest available.

Practice

The first practice session was briefly interrupted when Verstappen crashed at the Ascari chicane. Bottas ended the session fastest ahead of Hamilton and Alexander Albon. The second session ran without major incident, ending with Hamilton fastest, followed by Bottas and Lando Norris. Bottas was again fastest in FP3, ahead of Carlos Sainz Jr. and Norris. Daniel Ricciardo stopped on track with a mechanical failure late in the session, bringing out a brief red flag.
