Bottas won the Russian Grand Prix with Verstappen second. Hamilton, who started on pole, received two separate five-second penalties for performing practice starts outside the designated area and finished third.

Entrants

Ferrari Driver Academy members Mick Schumacher and Callum Ilott were entered to drive in the first practice session for Alfa Romeo Racing and Haas respectively, but FP1 was cancelled due to weather conditions — neither was able to run. Lance Stroll withdrew from the weekend after feeling unwell before the third practice session; he later tested positive for COVID-19 on the day of the race. Nico Hülkenberg replaces Stroll at Racing Point.

Milestones

The Nürburgring GP-Strecke hosts its first Formula One Grand Prix since the 2013 German Grand Prix.

Tyre choices

Pirelli supplies the C2, C3, and C4 compounds — the middle range available.

Practice

The first practice session was abandoned with 30 minutes remaining after rain and fog prevented the cars from leaving the pit lane — conditions were unsafe for the medical helicopter to fly. The second session was likewise cancelled. Bottas was fastest in the only completed practice session, FP3, ahead of Hamilton and Leclerc. Stroll sat out FP3 due to illness.
