Championship standings

Hamilton leads Vettel by fifty-nine points. Mercedes leads Ferrari by one hundred and fifty-five points in the Constructors’ Championship, with Red Bull Racing ninety-two points further back in third.

At Suzuka, Hamilton won as Vettel retired with engine problems shortly after the restart following a first-lap safety car. Verstappen finished second closely behind Hamilton; Ricciardo third, Bottas fourth.

Between-race developments

Carlos Sainz Jr. has moved from Toro Rosso to Renault, replacing the dropped Jolyon Palmer. Daniil Kvyat returns to Toro Rosso, taking Sainz’s vacated car. Pierre Gasly misses the round — his schedule conflicts with the final weekend of the 2017 Super Formula Championship — and is replaced at Toro Rosso by Brendon Hartley, the 2015 FIA World Endurance Champion, who makes his Formula One début. This is the first time a New Zealander has participated in a Formula One race in thirty-three years.

Tyres

Pirelli provides ultra-soft, super-soft and soft compounds. The purple branding on the ultra-soft is replaced by pink to raise awareness of breast cancer; several teams also incorporate pink into their liveries for the race.
