Championship standings

Vettel leads Hamilton by seven points. Mercedes leads Ferrari by thirty-nine points in the Constructors’ Championship, with Red Bull Racing third.

At Spa, Hamilton won his 200th Grand Prix start from pole, holding off Vettel to the finish. A safety car was deployed in the second half after the two Force India teammates Ocon and Pérez collided — the second time they had touched wheels during the race. Ricciardo finished third; Bottas managed only fifth.

Milestones

Hamilton starts from pole for the sixty-ninth time in his career. His sixty-eighth pole at Belgium equalled Schumacher’s all-time record; a pole at Monza would be a new record outright.

Penalties

A large number of power unit penalties are applied at Monza, making the final grid substantially different from qualifying order. Only four drivers start in their qualifying positions. Among the affected: both Red Bulls, Vandoorne and several midfield runners.

Practice

Hamilton and Bottas set the fastest times in FP1 and FP2 respectively, with times of 1:21.537 and 1:21.406. FP3 was disrupted by heavy rain; the session only ran green for the final sixteen minutes. Under those conditions, Williams driver Felipe Massa set the quickest time at 1:40.660.
