At Baku, Ricciardo claimed victory in a chaotic race that featured three safety car periods and a red flag. Vettel was handed a ten-second stop/go penalty after deliberately steering into Hamilton under safety car conditions — stewards found Hamilton had not applied his brakes at any point in the incident Vettel had protested. Hamilton was also forced to pit when his headrest came loose, dropping out of contention. Bottas recovered from a lap down after a first-lap puncture to finish second; Stroll took third — the first Canadian podium since Jacques Villeneuve at the 2001 German Grand Prix. Alonso finished ninth, scoring McLaren’s first points of the season.

Penalties

Lewis Hamilton carries a five-place grid penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change. Pascal Wehrlein must start from the pit lane after his car was modified while under parc fermé conditions.
