Vettel leads Hamilton after Sochi. Mercedes leads Ferrari in the Constructors’ Championship.

At Sochi, Bottas claimed his maiden Formula One victory, edging Vettel by 0.617 seconds — the smallest winning margin since the 2016 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Hamilton finished fourth after struggling with overheating throughout the race. Alonso failed to complete even the formation lap with a total power unit failure; Grosjean and Palmer collided on lap 1, bringing out a safety car. Ricciardo retired with brake problems, Red Bull’s third mechanical failure in four races.

Penalties

Stoffel Vandoorne carries a ten-place grid penalty for use of additional power unit elements.

Practice

Both Friday sessions featured an identical top six: Hamilton, Bottas, Räikkönen and Vettel, then the two Red Bulls. McLaren’s reliability troubles continued — Alonso sat out most of FP1 after a major engine failure on his first lap. He rejoined FP2 but had to wait almost half an hour while the team completed an engine change. In FP3, Räikkönen was quickest with Vettel second and Hamilton third. Bottas was fourth but only ran late in the session after Mercedes replaced an engine that had developed a water leak.
