Rosberg leads Hamilton by 12 points. This is the final round.

Previous race

Hamilton won Brazil — a race contested across three red-flag interruptions in treacherous wet conditions — with Rosberg second and Verstappen third. Räikkönen crashed heavily on the main straight, triggering one of the stoppages. The result brought Hamilton to within 12 points of Rosberg going into the finale.

Championship permutations

Lewis Hamilton can win the championship if he wins the race and Rosberg finishes fourth or lower. Hamilton needs a podium finish to remain in mathematical contention if he does not win. Rosberg clinches the title if he finishes on the podium, or if Hamilton finishes fifth or lower regardless of where Rosberg finishes.

Milestones

This is expected to be the final Grand Prix for Jenson Button — the 2009 World Champion — after McLaren announced he would step back from racing. It is also the final race for the Manor team, which may not be able to continue into 2017.
