Championship standings

Rosberg leads Hamilton by 33 points. Mercedes secured the Constructors’ Championship at the previous race in Japan.

Previous race

Rosberg won Japan from pole, with Hamilton suffering a poor start and dropping to eighth by the end of the first lap. Hamilton recovered to third, but could not pass Verstappen. The result secured Mercedes their third consecutive Constructors’ title. After Japan, the title fight is between Rosberg and Hamilton only — no other driver retains a mathematical chance.

Milestones

This is Haas F1’s first race at their home circuit; the team represents the first US-based Formula One constructor since Ford-owned Jaguar raced at Indianapolis in 2004. Jenson Button starts the race still mathematically alive for points.
