Championship standings

Prost leads the championship after three wins in five races. Senna is second, having taken back points at Spain.

Previous race

At the Circuit de Catalunya, Prost won from pole. Hill led the opening lap after a strong start but Prost took over on lap 11 and managed the pace. Hill retired with engine failure on lap 41 while closing in. Schumacher made a challenge on Senna but ran off the track at the final corner after having to avoid the smoking Lotus of Zanardi, ending his threat.

Milestones

Senna arrives at Monaco having won here in 1987, 1989, 1990, 1991 and 1992 — five victories, equalling Graham Hill’s record. A sixth win would break the record outright and set a new all-time mark for victories at a single Formula One circuit.
