Championship standings

Prost leads the championship after Spain, his third win of the season. Senna is second having scored at Monaco; the gap between them is tightening.

Previous race

At Monaco, Prost jumped the start and received a stop-go penalty, dropping to last and a lap down after stalling during the pit stop. He spent the rest of the race climbing through the field. Schumacher led comfortably before retiring with a hydraulics problem on lap 33. Berger was penalised for a tyre wall contact and later retired after colliding with Hill on lap 71 while trying to overtake. Senna won for the fifth consecutive year at Monaco.

Milestones

Senna’s Monaco win was his sixth at the circuit in total, breaking the all-time record for victories at a single Formula One venue that he had shared with Graham Hill. It was also his fifth consecutive win at Monaco, surpassing Hill’s record of five wins there in all.
