At the Österreichring, rain before the start left a wet track. Andretti led early until his engine failed; Nilsson charged from 16th to second on the wet surface. Jones ran from 14th to second as the track dried. Hunt led the closing stages until his engine failed with ten laps left. Jones took an unexpected first Formula 1 victory — so unexpected that the organizers had not arranged a copy of the Australian national anthem. Lauda was second and Stuck third.
