Fittipaldi moved back into second place at the British Grand Prix, 14 points behind Lauda with four rounds remaining.

Previous race

At Silverstone, a massive hailstorm on lap 53 sent cars spinning off at the same corner — Scheckter, Hunt, and Donohue among those who crashed. Only six cars were still running when the race was stopped. Fittipaldi, who had led before the storm and was on dry tyres, was declared the winner; Pace and Scheckter were classified second and third despite having crashed out. The result was finalised on the lap before the storm, after Ferrari protested the classification and were overruled.

Practice

Ian Ashley crashes at Pflanzgarten during qualifying practice and suffers serious ankle injuries. At the drivers’ demands, additional Armco barriers and safety measures are added around the 22.8-kilometre Nordschleife circuit before the race.

Milestones

In qualifying, Lauda laps the Nordschleife in under seven minutes — 6 minutes 58.6 seconds — becoming the first driver to accomplish this on the circuit’s full configuration.
