At Paul Ricard, Lauda led every lap from pole despite illness. Hunt closed late but fell 1.6 seconds short, with Mass a further second back. Scheckter had challenged in the early stages before his handling deteriorated. Regazzoni’s engine failed when he was running second.

Track changes

A new chicane has been installed at Woodcote Corner, drawing complaints from purists but introduced on safety grounds. This is also the first Grand Prix to use a traffic light start system — red and green lights replacing the traditional national flag.

Milestones

Graham Hill, who announced his retirement as a driver after failing to qualify at Monaco, makes a farewell lap at Silverstone one hour before the start — without overalls or helmet — before returning to his role managing his Embassy Hill team.
