Championship standings

Lauda leads by 17 points after Germany, with three rounds to go. Reutemann is back in second after Germany, one point ahead of Fittipaldi.

Previous race

At the Nürburgring, Reutemann took his first win of the season after Lauda suffered a puncture and front-wing damage requiring a slow pit stop. Laffite drove from 15th to finish second — the best result in the short history of the Frank Williams Racing Cars team. Lauda recovered to third despite the damaged handling. Fittipaldi retired with suspension damage on lap four, allowing Lauda to extend his lead despite not winning.

Entrants

Rolf Stommelen returns to the grid for the first time since his crash at the Spanish Grand Prix. Chris Amon is back in Formula One with Ensign. Brett Lunger makes his championship debut with Hesketh.

Practice

Practice is disrupted by multiple accidents. Brian Henton crashes his Lotus after hitting an oil patch. Wilson Fittipaldi breaks two bones in his hand in a separate incident.

During Sunday morning warm-up, Mark Donohue suffers a tyre failure at the flat-out right-hander after the pits and crashes through catch fencing and advertising boards. One track marshal is killed; another is injured. Donohue is taken to hospital with head injuries.

Shadow runs a Matra V12 engine in Jean-Pierre Jarier’s car — the first of two races in which the team will trial the French unit.
