Championship standings

Clark leads the championship as the series reaches the Nürburgring. Hill is one point behind and the title fight is tightening after four races of lead changes and retirements.

At Brands Hatch, Hill pressed Clark throughout but could not find a way past. Clark held on to win his third British Grand Prix. Surtees finished third for Ferrari. Gurney had to pit on lap 3 with electrical problems after promising pace early on.

Entrants

Honda makes their Formula One World Championship debut, entering their own chassis and engine — making them the first Japanese constructor and engine supplier in Formula One, and only the third outfit alongside Ferrari and BRM to design both their own car and power unit. American Ronnie Bucknum makes his Formula One debut as Honda’s driver. The organisers schedule an additional practice session so that Bucknum can complete the minimum five laps required to qualify; local driver Gerhard Mitter benefits from the same arrangement.

Practice

Dutch driver Carel Godin de Beaufort crashed his Porsche 718 during practice at the Nürburgring. He was rushed to hospital, where he died the following day. De Beaufort had raced a Porsche 718 in every event since 1961; his death ends Porsche’s association with Formula One until 1983.
