Championship standings

Clark leads the championship on 21 points, one ahead of Hill on 20. Richie Ginther and Peter Arundell are joint third on 11 points apiece.

Previous race

At Rouen, Gurney pulled clear of the field and won unchallenged. Clark set a new lap record and challenged early but retired when his engine lost a cylinder. Hill and Brabham fought over second throughout the closing laps, rubbing tyres and flicking up dirt, with Hill taking second and Brabham third. Surtees retired for the third time in four races.

Between-race developments

Lotus driver Peter Arundell suffered a severe accident in a Formula Two race at Reims-Gueux. Mike Spence is called up to replace him in the Lotus from this race onwards.

Circuit

This is the first British Grand Prix held at Brands Hatch, which also carries the honorary designation of the European Grand Prix. The circuit in Kent will alternate with Silverstone for future British Grands Prix.
