Championship standings

Mercedes have already secured the Constructors’ Championship. Hamilton leads the Drivers’ Championship by 74 points over Bottas. Hamilton clinches the Drivers’ title if Bottas fails to win or if Hamilton finishes in the top eight — or top nine if he also sets the fastest lap.

Previous race

Hamilton won Mexico for his tenth Grand Prix victory of the season — also Mercedes’ 100th race win in Formula One. He needed to outscore Bottas by 14 points to take the title in Mexico City, but Bottas finished third and Hamilton gained only 10 points on him. Verstappen suffered a puncture after contact with Bottas while fighting back through the field and spent most of the race recovering.
