Championship standings

Hill won Portugal for his third consecutive victory, with Coulthard second — Williams’s first 1-2 finish of the season — and Häkkinen third. The back-to-back wins have brought Hill within range of Schumacher in both championships.

Previous race

At Estoril, Hill won from the lead after Berger, who had taken pole, retired with gearbox failure on lap 8. Coulthard ran wide lapping a backmarker on lap 33, allowing Hill through; Williams took the lead of the Constructors’ Championship for the first time this season. Alesi retired on lap 39 after colliding with the Simtek of David Brabham while attempting to lap him.

Between-race developments

Schumacher returns to Benetton after his two-race ban. The 1994 CART season has concluded, freeing Nigel Mansell for the remainder of the Formula One season; Mansell replaces Coulthard at Williams for the final three rounds to bolster Williams in the Constructors’ battle. Flavio Briatore has purchased Johnny Herbert’s contract from Lotus’s administrators and transferred him to Ligier, trading places with Éric Bernard, who moves to Lotus. Hideki Noda joins Larrousse and Domenico Schiattarella takes the second Simtek alongside Brabham.

The Argentine Grand Prix, originally scheduled for today’s date, was cancelled on 1 June due to ongoing construction at the Autódromo Oscar Alfredo Gálvez. A race at the Circuito Permanente de Jerez — the first F1 race at that venue since 1990 — has been organised in its place and titled the European Grand Prix.
