After seven rounds, Schumacher leads the Drivers’ Championship with 66 points; Hill is second on 39.

Previous race

Hill won the British Grand Prix from pole position. Schumacher crossed the finish line second but was disqualified: he had overtaken Hill on the formation lap — not permitted under the regulations — then been shown a black flag on lap 26 for failing to serve a stop-go penalty within the required three laps. After Schumacher’s exclusion, Alesi was classified second, Häkkinen third, Barrichello fourth. Schumacher has been handed a two-race ban covering the Italian and Portuguese Grands Prix.

Between-race developments

Benetton have appealed Schumacher’s two-race ban; pending the outcome, he is permitted to compete. He races here at Hockenheim.

Track changes

The Hockenheim circuit has been modified from the previous year: the fast Senna chicane has been made slower.
