Mansell leads by 46 points with six races remaining, and Williams lead the Constructors’ Championship by 77 points over Benetton. This is the opportunity for Williams to seal both titles.

Mansell won the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim for his eighth victory of the season, tying the single-season record of eight wins set by Senna in 1988. Senna finished second — his first visit to the podium since Monaco — but dropped out of title contention in the process.

Between-race developments

Fondmetal replace Andrea Chiesa with Brabham driver Eric van de Poele ahead of this race. Brabham, now down to a single car with van de Poele’s departure and increasingly severe financial problems, do not replace him — reducing their entry to one car for the first time. With one fewer car in the pool, Larrousse driver Bertrand Gachot is no longer required to pre-qualify.

FISA formally warned Andrea Moda after Hungary’s pre-qualifying session to make a proper attempt to run both cars at the next race at Spa-Francorchamps, or face suspension from the following event. The team has repeatedly prevented Perry McCarthy from running in pre-qualifying. The session at Hungary marks the last pre-qualifying session held in Formula One to date.

Ferrari milestone

Ferrari celebrates its 500th start in a World Championship event this weekend, though its official count will be reached at the next round in Belgium due to a dispute over how to count early-1950s entries.
