Senna broke Mansell’s five-race winning streak at Monaco with one of the circuit’s most memorable finishes. Mansell pitted from the lead on lap 70 with a suspected puncture, emerged behind Senna, and despite setting a lap time almost two seconds faster than Senna’s on fresh tyres, could not find a way through in the closing laps. Senna won by 0.2 seconds, his fifth Monaco victory, equalling Graham Hill’s record.

Entrants

Andrea Moda’s Judd engines did not arrive in Montreal, having been withheld by the freight forwarding agent for non-payment of debts. The team borrowed one engine from Brabham, allowing Moreno to participate in pre-qualifying, but no engine was available for McCarthy, who did not take part.

Qualifying

Senna takes pole — the only non-Williams pole position of the 1992 season, and one of only two this year not taken by Mansell. Patrese qualifies second ahead of Mansell, who takes third. Rumours circulate that Mansell is under significant stress, as Williams are reportedly negotiating with Alain Prost for a 1993 drive. Berger qualifies fourth, Schumacher fifth, and Herbert sixth in an impressive result for Lotus.
