Previous race

Mansell won his home race at Silverstone for his seventh victory of the season, leading every lap and setting fastest lap. Patrese was second and Brundle third. As Mansell took the chequered flag, British spectators invaded the circuit before the final lap had finished — Mansell’s car was blocked by the crowd and he had to be returned to the pits by marshals. The win was the 28th of Mansell’s career, making him the most successful British Formula One driver of all time in terms of wins, surpassing Jackie Stewart’s 27.

Circuit

The Ostkurve chicane has been modified for this race, changed from a quick left-right gap into a full turning sequence following safety concerns arising from Érik Comas’s major accident there in his Ligier the previous year.

Entrants

Andrea Chiesa does not qualify and will be replaced at Fondmetal for the next race. Stefano Modena, Eric van de Poele, and Damon Hill also fail to qualify.
