Championship standings

Prost moved to within five points of championship leader Alboreto in France. After Alboreto retired with a turbo failure and Prost finished third, the gap has tightened sharply.

Previous race

At Paul Ricard, Nelson Piquet won for Brabham — the team’s 35th and final Formula One victory. It was also Pirelli’s first F1 win since 1957. Rosberg finished second having led for much of the race, but wrecked his tyres early and was caught by Piquet. Senna went off heavily at Signes after his engine failed and oil dropped onto his rear tyres; his Lotus caught fire, though he escaped with bruises.

Silverstone hosts the British Grand Prix this year under the alternating arrangement with Brands Hatch. At an average speed of 160.9 mph (259 km/h), this circuit is regarded as the fastest on the calendar — faster than Monza and the Österreichring.
