At Imola, Ayrton Senna led from pole but ran out of fuel in the final laps. Stefan Johansson, running as high as the lead after starting 15th, also ran dry. Alain Prost then took the lead, barely made it across the line, and was subsequently disqualified for his car being underweight. Victory was handed to Elio de Angelis in the Lotus-Renault — his second F1 win.

Entrants

Toleman enter a race for the first time this season. After Spirit folded, Toleman — with backing from new sponsor Benetton — were able to purchase their tyre contract and secure Pirelli supply. This weekend also marks the first appearance of Benetton’s name and livery on the car, the clothing company having taken over title sponsorship. Teo Fabi lines up for Toleman.

As usual at Monaco, the FIA restricts the field to 20 starters due to the circuit’s tight confines.
