Championship standings

After Monaco, de Angelis leads the Drivers’ Championship by two points from Prost and Alboreto. It is the tightest three-way contest at the top so far this season.

Previous race

At Monaco, Prost won ahead of Alboreto and de Angelis. Senna led from pole until his engine failed on lap 14. The race was shaped by a first-corner collision between Nelson Piquet and Riccardo Patrese, whose leaking gearbox dropped oil onto the racing line and caught out several drivers, including Niki Lauda, who stalled and retired on the spot.

Between-race developments

The Belgian Grand Prix, originally scheduled for 2 June at Spa-Francorchamps, has been postponed after the newly-laid track surface broke up under the cars during Friday practice. Overnight repairs were insufficient and Saturday practice was stopped entirely. The race has been rescheduled for September. The postponement creates a four-week gap in the calendar between Monaco and this race in Montreal.
