Championship standings

Prost leads the championship. Lauda won at Dijon with Prost losing ground after being forced to pit for a loose wheel, then recovering to seventh.

Previous race

Lauda won at Dijon for his first French Grand Prix victory since 1975. Tambay finished second, Mansell third. Prost pitted twice to deal with a loose wheel and a wheel change, and eventually finished seventh.

Entrants

With Teo Fabi committed to an IndyCar race at Milwaukee on the same weekend, his younger brother Corrado Fabi drives the second Brabham.

Practice

During practice, Tyrrell’s Martin Brundle had a huge crash at the Tabac corner. His car landed upside down and he was slightly injured. He ran back to the pits and had already climbed into the spare car before team boss Ken Tyrrell reached him on the radio and asked if he was all right. It emerged that Brundle could not remember how he had returned to the pits, leading Tyrrell to withdraw him from the meeting. Formula One medical chief Sid Watkins confirmed Brundle was mildly concussed; he is a non-starter for the race.

BMW has built specially detuned engines for Brabham to use at Monaco — around 700 bhp compared to the usual 900 bhp — on the theory that full power is unnecessary on the street circuit and a softer engine will be more reliable.
